A slap by a former Portland Police Bureau officer has resulted in money for a Lake Oswego man.
Austin Wade Leroux, 28, will get $34,500 from the city of Portland for the slap delivered by a policeman while Leroux was in handcuffs. The decision to pay Leroux - which settles a federal lawsuit - was made Wednesday, Jan. 3, on a 4-0 vote by the Portland City Council.
Last March 1, Leroux was taken into custody following a fight in downtown Portland during a Mardi Gras celebration.
According to Leroux's lawsuit, he asked Officer Dennis Bell whether he was under arrest. He claims Bell then cursed at him, called him a drunk, then slapped him across the face without provocation.
Leroux was taken to a detoxification center but was never charged with a crime.
Bell, a 30-year veteran, has resigned after a criminal investigation. He reportedly was asked to write a letter of apology to Leroux.
