Teenager arrested, charged with attempted murder in Forest Grove slumber party break-in
Police say Demetrio Anthony Avilez, 17, tussled with a homeowner while wielding a shotgun
Forest Grove Police arrested a 17-year-old Cornelius resident June 15 in connection with a struggle with a homeowner where shots were fired early Tuesday morning.
Police say Demetrio Anthony Avilez, 17, armed with a shotgun, snuck into a house located at 4212 Beaver Way early Tuesday morning and engaged in a struggle with the homeowner.
Shots were fired, and Avilez ran away. Police, acting on a tip, located Avilez at an apartment in Hillsboro Wednesday and arrested him on charges of attmpeted murder, burglary, unlawful use of a weapon, menacing, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment.
Avilez was spotted about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 14, lurking outside the house by a pair of teens who were up at the time. Avilez walked into the garage of the house, which was unsecured at the time.
One of the teens awoke their father, who armed himself with a pistol and confronted Avilez in the garage of the home.
Captain Aaron Ashbaugh, spokesman for the Forest Grove Police Department, said Avilez pointed the shotgun at the father, and the two began to struggle.
At one point during their fight, the father's pistol fired into the roof of the garage. Then Avilez's shotgun fired into a washing machine in the garage.
Eventually, the father managed to take the shotgun away from Avilez, who fled. Neither shot struck the men or any bystanders.
Ashbaugh said as many as 8 teenagers were hanging out at the house in what the occupants described as a slumber party. Ashbaugh said he didn't believe Avilez wasn't invited to the party, Avilez was familiar with teens in the home.
'There had been some communication between the suspect and at least two of the teenagers at the house prior to the suspect's arrival,' Ashbaugh said.
Ashbaugh said it was unclear what motive was present in the early-morning attack, though the investigation indicates that Avilez didn't pick the home at random.
"He knew the kids were there."
