Hungry for a traditional New York-style sandwich or some Italian ice cream?

A new sandwich outlet, Sargo's Subs, just opened at the Wood Village Town Center. The shop, next door to Starbucks off Northeast 223rd Avenue, opened Tuesday, Feb. 20, and is already seeing repeat business, said manager Darlene Spaete, of Gresham.

'Some are coming in every day,' she said.

The Wood Village location is the latest in the Sargo's chain, which has nearly 20 eateries in Oregon, Washington and California. But this is the first Sargo's in East County, said Richard Persinger, CEO of Sargo's Franchise Corp.

'This is a good market,' he said, noting the newly opened Kohl's department store nearby.

The location next to Starbucks put the kibosh on selling coffee, but the ubiquitous company does provide plenty of foot traffic for the new sandwich shop. And the coffee company's drive-through goes right past Sargo's.

With the busy staff helping a steady flow of lunchtime customers, Spaete and Persinger took some time to describe the business. Sargo's offers standard subs for the avid carnivore and vegetarian alike.

The ham, salami and pepperoni sandwich, and the all-cheese offering, for instance, come standard with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, wine vinegar and corn oil. There are a host of additional toppings available upon request. Patrons can choose from five kinds of bread that are baked daily and several types of salads.

There also are two specialty categories, 'big ones' and hot, toasted subs, which offer the all-inclusive Sargo (provolone, Swiss and American cheeses, ham, pastrami, turkey, cotto salami, bologna, pepperoni, gallo salami and roast beef), chicken cordon bleu and the hot Philly.

Topping it off is the gelato component, something that not every Sargo's outlet has, Persinger said. Among the delectable flavors are Almond Mocha Chip, Strawberry Cheesecake, Death by Chocolate and Snicker Dandy.

Persinger said his company provides leeway when it comes to decorative themes. The Wood Village outlet has Italian-themed color paintings that lend the business 'a bistro-ish' look, Spaete said.

Sargo's Subs, at 22352 N.E. Park Way, in Wood Village, is open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays.
