The Estacada Area Food Bank distributed 167,500 to approximately 600 different families in 2006, according to the food bank's annual report.

A majority of the food donated came from local donations and food drives. Local sources gave the Estacada Area Food Bank more than 36,000 pounds of food; that's about one-third of the food received at the resource center in 2006. The food bank took in 113,444 pounds of food and distributed 167,500 pounds-the difference resulted from a conscious effort to reduce the inventory of the food already in stock because of storage limitations.

On average, 200 families each month received 70 to 75 pounds of food. Those families were composed of 475 people, including 138 children. Of the 600 families who came in throughout the year, 191 had not been in the food bank before.

This past Christmas, the Estacada Area Food Bank's Adopt-A-Family program connected 72 pairs of families. The 72 giving families gave those in need an estimated $15,000 worth of clothing, tools, blankets, books, hygiene items, cleaning supplies, etc.

The resource center also made sure that 151 families in need received Christmas dinner, and participated in the KGW's annual Toy Drive. Eighty-two kids received presents.

More than 17 volunteers donated 6,731 hours making sure no one in Estacada, Eagle Creek and Colton would go hungry. If the center had to pay employees minimum wage, it would cost them more than $52,000.

Because the food bank is a private, non-profit organization administered by the volunteer staff, it does not receive any government money. All of its money comes from donations and grants. In the fiscal year 2006-July 2005 to June 2006-the food bank received $34,613 from local churches, businesses, individuals, foundations and fraternal organizations.

For those interested, donations can be sent to Estacada Area Food Bank, PO Box 198, Estacada, OR 97023.
