Broken gas pipe briefly causes evacuation

Police and gas company officials briefly evacuated homes near the intersection of S.E. 57th and Duke, on the evening of February 2nd, until a broken gas pipe could be repaired.

The intersection, which is on the border between the Woodstock and Brentwood-Darlington neighborhoods, was where Northwest Natural Gas workers were attempting to replace a gas pipe in the street. As the old pipe was being moved at about 6 pm, it broke, causing the leak.

The problem was quickly repaired and the pipe replaced, and the evacuated residents were allowed to return home within the hour.
