Wireless Internet creeping closer
As announced in the January BEE, Portland launched its heralded Wi-Fi free wireless Internet project on December 5th, downtown and on the central eastside. Initially, the system being built by Metro-Fi of California was not active south of Hawthorne Boulevard, with coverage no further south than OMSI and Ladds Addition.
But THE BEE has noticed the Metro-Fi antennas appearing in Inner Southeast; the little dome antennas mounted on street lights were turning up along S.E. Holgate Boulevard in December--including at 52nd (shown), 45th, and 17th. Another has been installed on 17th outside TriMet headquarters.
When they will be activated for public use has not yet been disclosed.
