The Blue Dragonfly Restaurant opened for business on December 21st at 1195 S.E. Powell Boulevard, on the north side of the street, just west of the Fireside Lounge, in a building which once hosted a finance company.

The new upscale restaurant and lounge, located at the north edge of the Brooklyn neighborhood, features Northwest cuisine with a Mediterranean influence. Fancy desserts such as 'Sacher Torte' appeal to guests who are winding down an evening's entertainment on the town, while fashionable late breakfasts are served overnight on weekends until 4 am.

General Manager Rafael Rodriguez has a degree in Nutrition and 12 years of restaurant experience in Portland and Mexico City. 'We have an extensive bar and wine list on the main floor, and also in our basement Lounge,' he says.

Surprisingly, the unassuming building, with its elegant dark wood and travertine accents, can seat up to 174 guests. 'Our menu will change seasonally, focusing on specialty dishes that highlight the area's best fresh foods,' says Rodriguez.

Chef John Willis also has a dozen years experience in food preparation. 'Right now we offer entrees featuring Pacific Northwest seafood: Salmon en Croutte, Diver Scallops, oysters, crab cakes and Ceviche. We serve a variety of artisan cheeses, wild mushroom parpadilla, and fresh greens prepared in artful ways. Other specialties include hummus, golden beet salad, and a tasty butternut squash gnocchi with Lamb.'

The Blue Dragonfly is a fresh complement to other ethnic foods in the area. 'For breakfast we serve organic brown eggs accompanied by bacon, ham, sausage and fruits,' says Rodriguez. Willis adds, 'Our Samurai Breakfast features eggs poached in miso broth with carrots, served with toasted nori, and cal-rose rice with toasted sesame seeds. We also create specialty hotcakes.'

Owner Dele Okedara plans to adjust the menu choices as he learns customer preferences. Entrees range from greens and roots ravioli to a New York strip steak with twice-baked potato. Fresh greens include arugula, spinach, mustard, and collard greens. Check out the full menu at the Internet website: www.bluedragonflypdx.com.

The Blue Dragonfly is open Monday through Thursday from 3 pm till 2 am, Friday from 3 pm till 4 am, Saturday from 8 am till 4 am, and Sunday from 8 am till 2 am.
