Enthusiastic volunteer also cuts hair for seniors

by: Rita A. Leonard, Katie Buffington, owner of Katie Cuts, serves as a Hairdresser, Beautician…and Volunteer.

There's a new hair salon in Sellwood--inside the ground floor of the new Sellwood Landing Retirement Center at 8517 S.E. 17th Avenue.

Although it's there partly to serve the needs of the residents of the center, it's also open to the public, and staffed by a woman who also is an enthusiastic volunteer for various causes for seniors and the disadvantaged.

Her new salon in Sellwood Landing is called 'Katie Cuts', and as you might guess from its name, its owner-operator is named Katie. Katie Buffington tells THE BEE she likes making people feel good. 'About half my clients are from Sellwood Landing, and half are from the general public. I used to do a lot of volunteer work, and I love to work with seniors,' says Katie. 'I have the best of both worlds here.'

Buffington, a former Sellwood resident, has been in business for 30 years. She works as both a Hairdresser and Beautician. She learned her craft at MaGee Bros. In Beaverton, and continues regularly with classes. 'I do haircuts for men, women, and children,' she says. 'Color is one of my specialties, with highlights, foils, and so forth. I also do perms and sell hair products, jewelry, and scarves.'

'My busy seasons are usually around the holidays,' she told us around New Year's. 'Many people come in for a New Year's makeover, bringing picture samples for me to copy, or choosing among the styling books that I have here.' This public-spirited woman works four days a week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays) from 9 am to 7 pm, reserving extra time for family and volunteering.

'I've volunteered at Loaves and Fishes, and assisted at retirement homes, taking residents shopping and on errands,' she says. 'I've also volunteered for the Special Olympics. After all these years, I'm still inspired by my work. Many of the senior residents here (population about 80) look forward to their weekly trim as a social experience. Many folks here may not feel physically well, and a haircut is something that really does them some good. They're my little angels,' she says fondly, and means it.
