Boys basketball: Tigard defeats Newberg by 30 in regular season finale
TIGARD - The Tigard High School boys basketball team finished its regular season schedule with a win and also gained some momentum going into the Class 6A state playoffs.
The Tigers, on Friday, concluded their Pacific Conference schedule by rolling to a 62-32 win over Newberg in a league game played at Newberg High School.
With the win, Tigard finished league play with an 11-4 record while also upping its overall mark to 17-8.
The Tigers, who finished in second place in the final Pacific Conference standings behind 15-0 Canby, opened the Class 6A state playoffs Wednesday evening with a first-round game against South Eugene. Results of that postseason contest weren't available when the Times went to press.
If Tigard won its playoff game with South Eugene, then it will be back in action Saturday in a state playoff second-round game against either Centennial or Westview. If the Tigers are playing Saturday, they'll be playing at home no matter who the opponent is.
In Friday's game at Newberg, junior Ryan Gorton paced Tigard with 15 points. Sophomore Matt Alexander added a season-high 11 points and senior post K.C. Wiser scored 10.
Newberg ended its season with a 1-14 league record and an overall mark of 4-20.
