Apollos earn state berth with victory

BEAVERTON - Sunset started fast Saturday and put a quick end to Westview's girls basketball season.

The Apollos (12-13 overall) took out the Wildcats (16-10) 66-56 at Southridge High School in a Metro League tiebreaker for the league's final Class 6A state playoff berth. The two teams had finished in a tie for fourth place in league.

Sunset, led by Crissy Watts' 17 points and 16 each from Samantha Potter and Alyssa Martin, blasted out to a 17-8 lead in the first quarter, then dropped a 23-9 scoring edge on the Cats in the second to lead 40-17 at halftime.

That lead grew to 51-26 after three quarters before Westview closed the game with a too little, too late 30-point fourth period.

The victory marked a second straight state playoff berth for the Apollos, who fell to Oregon City 64-42 on Tuesday night, while Westview missed the state playoff field for the third consecutive season.

Ari Bradley added 14 points for the Wildcats in the loss.
