Kautzky memorial to be dedicated at Tigard High on Saturday
TIGARD - The dedication of a memorial for former Tigard High School teacher and coach, Erik Kautzky, is scheduled for Saturday, March 3, at the school.
Kautzky was a science teacher, basketball coach and athletic trainer at THS for 24 years before retiring about three years ago. Then, in June 2005, he was struck and killed while cycling on Tualatin-Sherwood Road.
Thanks to the input of students and the Kautzky's friends, plus funds contributed by the current and last two graduating classes, and materials and services donated by different businesses, the memorial was made possible.
The memorial site, called Kautzky Plaza, features a gathering area filled with two colors of pavers surrounded by a concrete rim, six broad steps leading down toward the stadium and a long bench on each side. It is located on the hillside outside the athletic trainer's room.
The idea for the memorial got off the ground last spring with THS students and staff working on the concept. Organizers broke ground in mid-October.
Those interested in helping to put the finishing touches on the memorial are invited to take part in a planting party Saturday, March 3, at 8 a.m., to plant the final shrubs and flowers. The dedication ceremony is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:30 a.m.
Also, Tigard High School continues to offer a yearly scholarship in Kautzky's name. Those interested in donating to the scholarship and/or the memorial can send checks to Tigard High School, 9000 S.W. Durham Road, Tigard, OR 97224.
