Donna Erwin wins awards at framing competition

by: John Klicker, Columbia River Gallery owner Donna Erwin took home first place, Popular Choice, and Judges’ High Point awards from the Professional Picture Framers Association convention in Las Vegas, from March 7-10. Her winning entry framed a circa-1919 sepia photograph of Multnomah Falls and dignitaries.

Donna Erwin, owner of Columbia River Gallery in Troutdale, took first place, Popular Choice, and Judges' High Point awards in the International Open Framing Competition at the Professional Picture Framers Association convention.

The PPFA convention, held March 7-10 in Las Vegas, brought together picture framers from across the United States, Canada, Australia and other countries.

Erwin won first place and popular choice awards at the regional level in November to qualify for the international event. The winning entry is a photograph of Multnomah Falls and dignitaries taken around 1919.

Erwin framed it with two vintage-style frames, stacked and matted to complement the photograph's sepia tone. Erwin also added delicate hand-carving done with an Exacto knife.

'It's intended to mimic the falls in the image,' she said in a press release. 'It starts out small and narrow at the top, gains momentum as it descends, then makes a graceful splash at the bottom.'

The winning entry can be viewed at Erwin's gallery, 305 E. Columbia River Highway. For more information, call 503-491-8407.
