Golf Challenge returning to PGC
PORTLAND - Big-time professional golf is coming back to the Portland metropolitan area.
Peter Jacobsen SPORTS announced this spring that it would host the Umpqua Bank Challenge Tournament at Portland Golf Club on Aug. 28-30.
The Challenge, a reincarnatioon of the tournament formerly known as the Fred Meyer Challenge, will include The Regence Pro-am on Aug. 28 and the main field competition on Aug. 29-30, where 16 PGA TOUR professionals will pair into two-person teams and play for a $750,000 purse.
Hosted by Jacobsen, a longtime PGA pro who grew up in Portland, the UBC will this year include PGA legend Arnold Palmer, John Cook, Ben Crenshaw, Jay Haas, Bernhard Langer and Fuzzy Zoeller.
Palmer was the only player to compete in all 17 previous Challenge events.
'For 17 years I looked forward to coming to Portland and playing in The Challenge each summer,' said Palmer, 'I'm so pleased that Peter has brought back this great event and I can't wait to be there.'
