CANBY - Gresham's softball team dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker against No. 10-ranked Canby in nonleague action Wednesday afternoon.

The teams battled through a scoreless game most of the way before Canby broke through with the day's only run in the sixth inning. Gracie Barstad led off with a single and scored moments later when teammate Brittni Wiseman drilled a line-drive that got past Gresham's outfielders and rolled almost to the leftfield fence.

'We just had to stay focused and not get too tense,' Wiseman said. 'I just did what I had to do.'

Gresham's best scoring chance came in the third inning when Stephanie Guenther drilled a lead-off double into center field. She moved around to third base, and appeared to have a chance to score when teammate Becca Moen blasted a shot into left field. But Canby's Wiseman backpedaled to make the catch and end the inning.
