Portland Beavers

The Beavers open April 5 and start their home schedule April 13 against Fresno at PGE Park.

• It's a good bet Jack Cust will play here. Cust, outrighted by San Diego, had 10 days to be picked up by another team on waivers, accept his Triple-A assignment or become a free agent. He's still practicing with Beavers/Padres at spring training.

• The Padres picked up pitcher Justin Germano, a Bevo in 2004-05, off waivers from Philadelphia. Germano, 24, will be a starter here and a possible San Diego emergency starter.

• Catcher Pete LaForest, who hit two homers in a recent game for San Diego, has been battling Rob Bowen to be the Padres' backup catcher. LaForest had been slated for Portland.

• The Padres sent pitcher Aaron Rackers and outfielders Adam Shabala and Will Venable to minor-league camp, with Shabala expected to play in Portland.
