Former Timber goalie Josh Saunders won't have to wait long to play his former mates. Saunders has landed in Puerto Rico, which will be at PGE Park for Portland's home opener April 21.
Saunders led the Islanders to a 1-0 win at home over FC Dallas of Major League Soccer last week. Puerto Rico then lost 2-1 to the L.A. Galaxy, which had opened the four-way competition with a 3-2 win over Rochester. Former University of Portland star Nate Jaqua scored both of L.A.'s game-winning goals.
• New coach Gavin Wilkinson had hoped to bring back John Galas as one of his assistants, but Galas has taken a job as an assistant women's coach at the University of Arizona. Former Timber star and coach John Bain also was being recruited for assistant duties, but he has other soccer responsibilities, along with a child on the way, and 'we couldn't make it worth his while,' Wilkinson says.
• As yet, no one has been given No. 5, which Wilkinson wore when he played defense for the Timbers. 'Anyone can have it,' he says, 'but maybe they think it's cursed.'
