On March 16, 28 West Linn and Wilsonville High School students represented 20 projects at the Intel-Northwest Science Expo (the state science fair).
'Our students had a very successful day and were recognized by the judges for the quality of their work and their depth of understanding,' said CREST ISEF Coordinator Amy Schauer.
State Award recipients are as follows: First Place in Behavioral Science awarded to Chris Canary and Ross Hansen, Wilsonville High Schoool, and First Place in Mathematics awarded to Avi Levy, West Linn High School. Second Place in Engineering was awarded to Dane Bennington, WHS and Second Place in Plant Sciences was awarded to Michael Bernert, WLHS. Third Place in Environmental Management was awarded to Kacie Dean, WHS.
Honorable Mentions are as follows: Behavioral Science, Cameron Casteel and Brennan Edwinson, WHS; Biochemistry, Kelsey Guerins and Nicole Panichello, WLHS; Earth Science, Laura Huck, WLHS; Engineering, Eugene Bistolas, WHS; Medicine and Health Sciences, Katie Carnahan and Lisa Kirkemo, WLHS, and Physics and Astronomy, Lucas Hill, WHS.
Scholarships were awarded to the following students: Avi Levy, WLHS, to the University of Oregon for a total of $20,000 at $5000 a year for four years, if he chooses to attend.
All Place Finishers (first through third) will receive from $7,000 to $12,000 from Willamette University or from $4,000 to $10,000 from Lewis and Clark College if they choose to attend those schools.
The following students received Special Awards: Avi Levy, WLHS, the Mu Alpha Theta Award for Excellence in Mathematics; Dane Bennington, WHS, the United States Army Certificate of Merit; Michael Bernert, WLHS, the U.S. Army Exceptional Project; Kacie Dean, WHS, Excellence in Statistics from the from the American Statistical Association; Chris Canary and Ross Hansen, WHS, for Excellence in Statistics from the American Statistical Association; and Dane Bennington, WHS, for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Award for Excellence in Engineering.
