Winter Hawks

Owner Jim Goldsmith has named himself director of hockey operations, meaning any decisions by General Manager Ken Hodge, coach Mike Williamson or scouts go through him, but all decisions about player personnel will be made based on collective input.

• The Winter Hawks have signed a goalie to compete with Kurtis Mucha for playing time next year. He's Mark Guggenberger, 18, from Richfield, Minn. An NHL scout referred him to the Winter Hawks, and assistant coach Kyle Gustafson scouted him. Guggenberger, 6-2, 200 pounds, is rated 22nd among available North American goalies by the NHL's Central Scouting Bureau - one spot above Mucha.
