Newcomer sends sweet notes soaring

LOCAL PERFORMER: Alela Diane Newcomer
by: Courtesy of Holocene Music, On her debut album, “The Pirate’s Gospel,” Alela Diane’s voice invites listeners to come in and stay a while.

Very few singers have a voice that immediately demands your full attention, but newcomer (and current Portland resident) Alela Diane is one of them.

Like fellow Portlander Laura Gibson, Diane's arresting voice resonates far beyond her relatively tender years.

On 'The Pirate's Gospel,' her sparse and beautiful debut album, Diane's vocals - rich and clear - take center stage, bringing to life a string of haunting parlor-folk tales that ache with a bygone beauty.

When Diane intones, 'I know that here I've sung before,' on album opener 'My Tired Feet,' she might be telling us something. Music this beautiful and classic definitely feels like it's being channeled from another place and time.
