Leona Joanne Reed
Leona Joanne Reed, a lifelong Sellwood resident, died of pneumonia at her new home in Gresham on February 4th, at the age of 87. Leona was born in Portland on October 10th, 1919, and was a cab driver during World War II; she later was self-employed as a hearing aid specialist. Leona married Lew Reed in 1954; he predeceased her in 1985. She was a member of the Elks, and had a lifetime pass to Disneyland. She moved from Sellwood to Gresham in 2004. Leona is survived by her daughter, Frances Fleischmann; her son, Thomas Sherwood; by 6 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. A 'Celebration of Life' gathering was held on February 8th at Wilhelm Funeral Home in Westmoreland. Remembrances are directed to the Providence Child Center.
Winifred E. May
Winifred May, born Winifred Matters on May 4, 1920, in St. Paul, Minnesota, died of natural causes at her home in Inner Southeast Portland on March 12 at the age of 86. Winifred was married to Edward, a Lutheran minister, in 1945, and after their wedding in St. Paul, Minnesota, the couple drove cross-country to the former community of Vanport along the Columbia River. They survived the flood that destroyed that community and continued to live in Portland until 1958, when they moved to Ridge, Colorado. They moved on to Evanston, Illinois, a Chicago suburb, in 1961; in 1970 they moved to New York City. They retired to Inner Southeast Portland in 1985. Winifred is survived by her husband Edward, her sons Stephen, David, and Lawrence, and her daughter Virginia. A memorial service was held at St. Timothy Lutheran Church on S.E. Powell Boulevard on Saturday, March 17th. Disposition was by Oregon Cremation. Remembrances are directed to St. Timothy Lutheran Church.
