The city of Fairview announced Monday, June 20, that it has canceled the annual Fairview on the Green festival, scheduled for Aug. 27, because of a late start in planning the event and the challenges of raising sponsorship dollars in the difficult business climate.
'We are certainly disappointed in having to make this decision, but we do not want to lose any of the success and momentum from the previous five years,' Mayor Mike Weatherby said in a news release.
Formerly known as Chili on the Green, the summer festival in Fairview Community Park featured a popular chili cook-off contest as well as arts and crafts vendors, a beer and wine garden, silent auctions and children's activities.
This would have been the first year that the city-affiliated nonprofit Fairview Community and Arts Council would have handled the event instead of the city. There are plans to bring the festival back in 2012.
'We are still working out some of the details with the new nonprofit, which delayed planning for this year's event,' City Administrator Joe Gall said in a news release. 'We have been working with our various entertainment vendors and sponsors to help ensure a great festival next year.'
