Barlow opens league play with a sweep vs. Gresham
TENNIS - Centennial wins three-setters to edge Douglas 5-3
The Barlow boys tennis team opened the Mount Hood Conference season on a solid note, shutting out rival Gresham 8-0 on Thursday afternoon.
The Bruins won all four doubles bouts in straight sets, led by Andy Frashour and Garrett Parfitt with a 6-0, 6-2 win in the top spot.
'We always want to play our best,' Parfitt said. 'It was important not to hold anything back.'
Barlow picked up a pair of shutout wins from David Strickland and Carlo Fialla in singles action, while teammate Mike Bates won the day's only three-set battle in the No. 4 spot.
Gresham's Dan Gilbertson took the first set in a tiebreaker only to see Bates comeback for the 6-7, 6-2, (10-3) win. The final set was played in the super tiebreaker format due to darkness.
Bates dominated the extra session with a series of passing shots and well-placed lobs to build a quick 7-2 lead before ending play with a well-hit shot down the right sideline.
• In other action, the Centennial boys won a 5-3 battle against David Douglas, clinching the victory with a pair of three-set wins in No. 2 and 3 doubles. The Gresham girls swept singles play, winning all four matches in straight sets, to beat Barlow 7-1.
