If you don't think the city's two free, weekly summer events - Music in Meinig and Movies in Meinig - was enough, the city of Sandy has the solution.
In response to Mayor Linda Malone's desire to have chamber music perform at the newly renovated Meinig Park amphitheater, the city of Sandy will host its first Acoustic Music Festival there in July and August.
'It's a venue where we can do more intimate acoustic music, that's not so lost as it would be on the big stage,' said coordinator Katie Murphy. She said the festival will include classical music, singer/songwriters and cultural traditional music.
'There's a wealth of musicians in this area,' Murphy said. 'It's exciting to have another stage to take advantage of some of the groups that you didn't feel comfortable putting on the other stage.'
So far, Murphy has booked a Latin jazz/samba band complete with flamenco dancers and local vocalist Judy Strand to perform opera. She's finalizing plans for more acts for the four-week series.
The Acoustic Music Festival is scheduled to take place at 6:30 p.m. on four Sundays - July 15, 22 and 29 and Aug. 5.
'I'm hoping that the public and the citizens of Sandy are receptive to this,' Malone said, 'so we can continue it and build on the use of the park.'
