Sixth annual event this Saturday at Geren's
Get out the John Deere and roll down to the sixth annual Tractor Show and Customer Appreciation Day at Geren's Farm Supply, 33680 S.E. Kelso Road (adjacent to Highway 26) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 14.
Like a cruise-in for the agricultural enthusiast, the event invites locals to display their tractors at Geren's and vie for awards in categories such as 'oldest tractor,' 'work-in-progress' and 'people's choice.'
Check out the crowd favorite '50s-era Oliver Super 99 tractor and an extremely rare - as in, only 49 of them made - John Deere model.
'It's fun to see the history of the tractors,' said Roz Rushing, the Geren's employee who organizes the yearly event. 'You see agricultural history - what once was used and how things are so different in how they're made today. It's just like with older cars and how fascinating they are.'
Anyone who wants to show their old tractor may do so at no charge, and there's virtually no limit to the number of tractors that can fit on the Geren's lot. All participants get a gift for being good sports.
'It's a lot of fun, and the guys who bring the tractors always have a good time,' Rushing said. 'I think it's gaining popularity every year; more people are getting interested in it. This year we could see the most number of tractors ever.'
The customer appreciation part of the day includes door prizes, balloons, face painting and free lunch. There will also be sales on Geren's products, including animal feed and live Cornish cross chicks. Donations for the Sandy Relay For Life Party Girls team will be accepted throughout the day.
'Even people who are not currently customers of ours can come and check us out,' Rushing said. 'There's no pressure to buy anything; just have fun with us, meet the owners and employees, and just enjoy a community event.'
