Saints take command in Southern Region with sweep

BASEBALL - Mt. Hood CC earns back-to-back shutouts against Lane
by: David Ball, Mt. Hood's Grant Glover rounds the bases after hitting a home run in the seventh inning during the Saints' 10-0 win in Game 1.

The Mt. Hood Community College baseball team took charge in the Southern Region by sweeping a doubleheader against its closest challenger Tuesday, April 10.

The Saints blew past Lane 10-0 in Game One, ending the game on the mercy-rule in the seventh inning. Pinch-hitter Tyson Smith reached with a two-out single in the seventh inning, and Gresham graduate Justin Speer sent an RBI-double over the top of the outfielders to end the game.

Mt. Hood starter Heath Goin did his part from the mound, carrying a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Goin gave up only two hits and struck out six.

'Sweeping this doubleheader is going to separate us from the rest of the league - it's huge,' Goin said.

Mt. Hood completed that sweep when Jerad Thompson threw a 1-0 shutout in Game 2. He went the distance, scattering five hits and striking out four. The Saints (9-1) opened up a four-game lead against the Titans (5-5) in the Southern Region standings.
