BASEBALL - Nestucca scores the winning runs in the sixth inning
by: David Ball, Corbett starter Kevin Greenslade fires a pitch to the plate during the Cardinals' 5-3 loss to Nestucca on Tuesday afternoon.

Corbett's baseball team dropped a late-inning heartbreaker 5-3 against first-place Nestucca on Tuesday, April 10.

Deadlocked 3-3, Nestucca scored the winning runs when Charlie Sutton was hit by a pitch and Ben Hulburt drew a walk to lead off the sixth inning.

Corbett looked like it would escape the jam when reliever Andrew Hanes entered the game and struck out the first two batters he faced. The Cardinals were ready to end the threat on a routine ground ball, but it slipped under an infielder's glove and allowed Sutton and Hulburt to score the game's final runs.

'Pitching is key for us, and our guys were tough to hit today,' Corbett coach Derek Jaques said. 'But errors killed us. If we make a couple of those plays, this game probably comes out differently.'

The Cardinals had chances for a comeback down the stretch, but stranded runners at third base in each of the last three innings.

Nestucca (5-0) remains in first place in Special District 1, while Corbett (3-1) is in second.
