SOFTBALL: Hounds score 21 runs in two games but settle for a split with Knappa
Gaston notched an unusual split with Knappa in a Northwest League softball doubleheader last Friday.
The Lady Greyhounds (9-3, 1-1) pummeled Knappa 16-8 in Game 1, but sleepwalked through the nightcap, making three errors in a 5-4 loss.
Gaston had plenty of offense in the opener, but much of it came courtesy of 12 Knappa fielding errors. Gaston's 16 runs came on only eight hits.
Senior Christine Catino went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, while senior Faith Hawley drove in four runs. K'rene Delplanche was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, and Katrina Rios had a double and two RBIs. Marissa Hedin, Jessica Garner and Rios scored three runs apiece in the blowout win.
The sloppiness carried over to the other side, however. Gaston made six errors of its own, opening the door for four unearned runs that kept Knappa in contention. The Loggers eventually fell off the pace with Gaston scoring five runs in the fifth inning and six in the sixth.
Game 2 was a less messy affair. Knappa pulled ahead early, scoring two runs in the first inning and three more in the third. Trailing 5-2, Gaston was able to push across a run in the sixth and another in the seventh to get within a run.
Angela Lance led off the seventh with a single, moved up on a base hit by Delplanche and scored on Hedin's sacrifice fly. Delplanche represented the tying run but was stranded at third.
Gaston will now prepare for its first home game of the season, a doubleheader against Corbett on Friday.
