SOFTBALL - Kelli Eubanks hits a homer for Reynolds
The Reynolds softball team took Barlow's best shot and came away unfazed during a 3-0 shutout win over the Bruins on Friday, April 20.
Clinging to a 1-0 lead midway through the game, Reynolds relied on its defense to turn away Barlow's biggest challenge in the fourth inning.
Lauren Wilkerson sent a single into right field that put teammate Kristel Baeckel into motion from second base. The Bruins' senior never slowed down on her way around third, but Reynolds was ready. Outfielder McKaela Laverty quickly scooped up the ball and fired a perfect throw to home plate where Reynolds catcher Gabby Stover secured the ball in her mitt and prepared for a collision with Baeckel, tagging her out well in front of the plate.
'She looked like a train coming at me,' Stover said. 'I just told myself not to drop the ball and to make sure and get the tag.'
Barlow coach Scott Vang rushed to the scene and spent a couple minutes aggressively arguing the call before getting tossed by the umpire.
Reynolds added to the fireworks moments later when Kelli Eubanks smacked a lead-off home run over the center field fence to double the Raiders' lead to 2-0.
Eubanks had little trouble from the pitcher's circle, striking out nine batters and allowing only one base-runner through the last three innings.
• In other MHC action Friday, David Douglas blanked Sandy 8-0, getting a two-run double and a two-run homer from Laura Safley.
