by: COURTESY OF WHITE BIRD, The Dayton Contemporary Dance Company finds inspiration for its own art form from the vibrant work of painter Jacob Lawrence.

'The Jacob Lawrence Project'

The vibrant Dayton Contemporary Dance Company honors the work of Jacob Lawrence, arguably the most famous black American painter of the 20th century.

Four choreographers, including the company's artistic director, Kevin Ward, find inspiration in the bold work of the esteemed painter, who spent the latter part of his life as an art professor at the University of Washington.

The dance presenter White Bird last brought the Ohio-based company to Portland in 2004.
