Peter McDougal, Lisa Hawking and Jen Freeborn to take leadership positions
Three of West Linn's primary schools will have new faces at their helms next fall. Cedaroak Park, Willamette and Sunset primary schools are all welcoming new principals.
Peter McDougal, an alumnus of Lakeridge High School in Lake Oswego, is returning from Central Oregon to his old stomping grounds to take leadership of Cedaroak Park Primary. The current principal, Carolyn Miller, has accepted a position as assistant director of student services for the West Linn-Wilsonville School District.
McDougal was principal at a high school in the Culver School District and prior to that was the assistant principal at both Wood Middle School and Wilsonville High School.
'I am happy to be coming back to what I consider my home,' McDougal said. 'My family has a lot of friends in the area, and I will be working with a lot of teachers and administrators that I know. I think it is an ideal fit.'
McDougal earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash., and completed his doctorate degree just last week from the University of Oregon.
'I'm very relieved to have my dissertation finished, and so is my family,' he said.
McDougal has been an educator for 15 years, and he feels the most important part of the process is 'the relationships in the learning.'
'I am looking forward to connecting with the students and the community,' he said. 'I love creating ways for students to learn, discover and find things out.'
McDougal and his wife plan to move back to Wilsonville where their two daughters will be in second and fifth grade at Boones Ferry Primary School. Their son, who is four, will head into kindergarten there in two years.
Lisa Hawking will be assuming the principal-ship at Sunset Primary School this fall as Kathy Ludwig moves into her new role as assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction for the WL-WV district primary schools.
Hawking has most recently been the instructional coordinator at Willamette Primary School. Prior to that, she was the instructional coordinator at Bolton Primary School. She has also been a teacher in several schools in the district, including Wilsonville Primary and Boones Ferry Primary.
'This is an evolving dream for me,' Hawking said. 'I was so honored to be selected for this job. I've been connected with the district for more than 17 years, and I've spent all my years with Roger Woehl and Jane Stickney. It is such an amazing, and supportive administrative staff.
'There are already so many amazing things in place at Sunset that I'm really going to focus on learning the community. I want to learn the hopes and dreams of the staff and the students.'
Outgoing principal Kathy Ludwig is confident that 'Lisa will be a wonderful principal for Sunset and a great advocate and champion for your children, the community, the staff and the school. She is an incredible instructional leader and a person of great integrity, compassion, thoughtfulness and grace.'
Hawking lives with her husband, son, 12, and daughter, 10 in Portland.
The Sunset PTSO is planning a 'meet and greet with lemonade and cookies' event during the summer to introduce Hawking to her new community.
Jen Freeborn will be the new principal at Stafford Primary School, taking over the role from Patrick Meig, who is now the planning principal of the district's two new schools and will be principal of the newly opened Lowrie Elementary School in Wilsonville starting in the fall of 2012.
Freeborn has worked in the WL-WV district since 1995 in a variety of roles, including teacher at Boeckman Creek Primary School and Athey Creek Middle School, instructional coordinator at Boones Ferry Primary School and Rosemont Ridge Middle School and assistant principal at West Linn High School.
'I am truly honored to be the next principal at Stafford Primary School. It is a spectacular school that holds learning and students at the heart of everything that happens there,' Freeborn said.
Freeborn and her family live in West Linn, and her daughter, Reese, is a fourth-grader at Stafford Primary. Her son, Kade, is a sixth-grader at Athey Creek Middle School.
Freeborn earned her bachelor's degree from Portland State University and her master's degree in teaching from Willamette University. She earned her administrator's license from Portland State University in 2009.
