The Hawks have the No. 1 pick in Thursday's Western Hockey League bantam draft. Team President Jack Donovan says Portland has its eyes on two players, with about seven rated equally. The Hawks also have two second-round picks. Donovan hopes the players will help two years down the road, when the Hawks expect to compete for the WHL U.S. Division title. 'We're building for a five-year run,' he says.

• Donovan says the family of touted defenseman prospect Patrick Wiercoich plans to wait until the summer to decide about committing with the Hawks. He's 6-2 and only 155 pounds, and Donovan says the father worries about his son getting hurt in the league. 'I still think we have a very good shot at him,' Donovan says.
