PORTLAND - The Gresham girls tennis team saw its quest for an undefeated season come to an end after a 7-1 loss to four-time Mount Hood Conference champion St. Mary's on Thursday at Willamette Park.

The Gophers built an 18-2 singles record through their first five league duals, but couldn't manage a win against the Blues. St. Mary's won the top three bouts in straight sets, and No. 4 player Gina Kelly overcame a sluggish start to complete the sweep with a 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 win. The battle lasted almost three hours, and the marathon win clinched the Blues' team victory before the players for the day's final match even started to warm up.

St. Mary's (5-1) also won three of the four doubles matches with Gresham getting its only point of the day when Monica Chin and Julia Warren came back for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 win in No. 3 doubles.

In other MHC action, Reynolds won three of four doubles bouts to get past Hood River 5-3.
