Fast times turned in at Beadnell Classic

Top middle school runners take to the track for the mile race at Fowler
by: Christopher Onstott THERE THEY GO — Runners take off at the start of the seventh-grade race during the Beadnell Classic Invitational mile, held last month at Fowler Middle School in Tigard.

A big, enthusiastic crowd.

Fast times and good races.

It all added up to a fun day on the track during the Beadnell Classic Invitational Mile race, held May 24 at Fowler Middle School.

The event featured the top sixth, seventh and eighth-grade boys and girls runners from Fowler, Hazelbrook and Twality middle schools.

The fastest race of the day was the eighth-grade boys event.

Zac Simms from Fowler Middle School won that mile race in a time of 5 minutes, 13.3 seconds. Harry Visse of Hazelbrook was second in a time of 5:20.9 and Billy Calder of Hazelbrook was third at 5:22.8.

Also running in the eighth-grade boys race were Bryce Tucker, JJ Caufield and Jarod Gogal from Fowler, Drew Fergusson, Tyler Walker and Sam Kirby from Twality and Steven Shocklas from Hazelbrook.

In the eighth-grade girls race, Aryana Harvey of Hazelbrook triumphed in a time of 6:10.6. It was the third straight year that Harvey has run to victory at the Beadnell Classic.

Madison Berggren of Hazelbrook was second in the eighth-grade girls race in a time of 6:14.3 and Laura Heinze, also from Hazelbrook, was third at 6:25.7.

Also competing in the eighth-grade girls race were Hannaly McGaughey, Hannah McDade and Molly Scherner of Twality, Emily Heinze of Hazelbrook and Gabby Galvez and Brittany Webb of Fowler.

The seventh-grade girls race had the closest finish of the day. Emily Leonard of Hazelbrook won that event in a time of 5:49.7. That put her just one second ahead of second-place finisher Nicole Latourette of Hazelbrook, who had a mark of 5:50.7. Maura Dunigan of Hazelbrook was third in a time of 5:52.3.

Also competing in the seventh-grade girls race were Rachel Josephson, Abby Lewis, Larissa Cleaver and Hannah Copelan from Fowler, Julia Emery of Hazelbrook and Ellie Freeman, Kasey Kallevig and Jordan Harden of Twality.

Kent Brady of Hazelbrook ran to victory in the seventh-grade boys race in a time of 5:34.0. Austin Brown of Twality was second in that race in 5:38.8 and Michael Gillard was third with a mark of 5:39.0.

Also competing in the seventh-grade boys race were David Howell and Nathan Hocker from Fowler, Michael Arellano and Ryan Malinowski of Twality and Mark French from Hazelbrook.

Sam Nihill of Fowler had a winning time of 5:54.6 in the sixth-grade boys race. Casey Bauer of Twality was second in that race in 5:58.0 and Brandon Gillard of Hazelbrook was third at 5:59.5.

Also competing in the sixth-grade boys race were Kelvyn Blanco and Brett Thomas from Twality, Andrew Robinson and Joe Marquez of Hazelbrook and Eric Holte and Daniel Jones from Fowler.

Twality's Sareena Patzke won the sixth-grade girls race with a mark of 6:05.6. Jordan Anderson of Twality was second at 6:13.6 and Kate Intile of Hazelbrook was third with a time of 6:20.6.

Also competing in the sixth-grade girls race were Anna Verloo and Rachel Snyder of Hazelbrook and Abby Portwood of Fowler.
