Marie Elizabeth Drew

Aug. 15, 1921-June 12, 2011

Sandy resident Marie Elizabeth Drew died Sunday, June 12, with daughter Susan at her side. She was 89.

A memorial gathering will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 27, at Eagle Creek Presbyterian Church, 29455 S.E. Burnett Road, Eagle Creek.

Marie was born Aug. 15, 1921, in Dover, N.H., to Fred and Lydia Drew. She was raised in nearby Barrington and graduated from Dover High School where she learned Latin, which served her well over the years with English.

On May 10, 1940, she married Earl Drew in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They drove to Oregon in a Model A car and ran Drew's Chocolates in Rhododendron until they had to stop hand-dipping chocolates because of the war rationing of sugar, butter and chocolate. They made their home in Sandy in 1944.

Although a stroke in 2004 limited her speech and arithmetic, she continued to be a great comfort to her daughters and others, giving so much by simply being herself, enduring with style and grace, sharing her smile judiciously. She loved babies, especially patting their cheeks. Dogs and cats were dear companions throughout her life.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband in 1992; her son, Randolph, in 1997; daughter, Martha Drew, in 2001; brother, Fred Drew Jr. in 1988; and her sister, Christine Greer, in 1989.

Survivors include her daughters, Beverley Kindley of Hillsboro, Nancy Drew of Bellingham, Wash., and Susan Drew of Sandy; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to Portland Audubon Society, 5151 N.W. Cornell Road, Portland, 97210; or to Friends of the Columbia Gorge, 522 S.W. Fifth Ave., Portland, 97204.
