Comments from the Lake Oswego Review Web site

Last week's Lake Oswego Review carried a story about members of the Animal Liberation Front taking credit for spray painting a Lake Oswego man's garage door and covering his daughter's car with some type of caustic chemical.

The local resident, Eliot Spindel, is a researcher at the Oregon National Primate Research Center at Oregon Health and Science University. He is involved in studies on nicotine and how it affects unborn children.

Numerous responses to the story were posted to the Review's Web site (www.lakeoswegoreview.com). Comments include (names of those submitting comments are not required to be posted to the Web site):

'These little cowardly ALF punks should realize that if the rules of the game are going to be that you are allowed to threaten someone with violence to make your point .... their next protest may not turn out the way they want.

'Is this what you advocate, cowardly ALF punks? Or does your childish world view allow you to do what you want .... and everyone else is supposed to follow the law?

'How about you take off your gutless masks, identify your sorry selves, and allow us to find out where you live.'

'Is there any difference between ALF and Islamic terrorists? None. They use the same tactics to intimidate and impose their own ideology on others by violence and destruction. ALF thugs cross the line of freedom of speech when they threaten innocent people with bodily harm and death.'

* * *

'I'm an animal lover and not a fan of animal testing at all, but any group who resorts to terrorism not only discredits themselves, they do serious harm to the cause itself.

'What good is your argument if it doesn't stand on its own merits? When you resort to terrorism, you prove that you are no better (and often far worse) than those you claim to fight.

'An 'eye for an eye' only leaves both of you blind.'

'These 'activists' are cowards. They sneak around at night in masks, then post their cowardly acts on the internet. They are not even willing to take personal credit for their illegal actions.

'These 'protesters' are slime.'

'According to your article, this scientist's research helps thousands of innocent unborn children who are seriously injured by smoking moms. Even if we could only save a handful of kids, aren't these animal studies worth it?

'Is it me, or did these creeps target a guy who is doing some of the most valuable and compassionate research out there?'

'It is a sad day when someone who has made it his life's work to try to help people should have to fear for his safety and the safety of his loved ones. ALF's use of intimidation and violence as instruments of change is completely unacceptable. Fortunately for those who support animal research, it is also totally self-defeating. Who can take animal activists seriously at this point? They have proven themselves to be completely without conscience, and are clearly equipped with a very poor ability to reason. How does it further their cause (no use of animals in research ... or as food ... or in clothing) to advocate or cause harm to other sentient beings (i.e. people)? Something is seriously wrong with these folks.'

'I hope the police catch these jerks.

'Nobody should live in fear in their own home. Nobody's children deserve to be exposed to this kind of garbage.

'I hope that somebody turns them in.'

'These ALF people are a joke and the LOPD and OHSU Public Safety Department needs to crack down on their antics swiftly.'

'For too long, the animal rights activists have manipulated information and misinformed the public about the value of animal research. I applaud the Oregon Health Sciences University and its researchers and staff for standing up to the latest intimidation tactics. We all can lead healthier, longer lives thanks to the scientific advancements resulting from animal research.'

OHSU's Jim Newman is right. Judging from these comments, Oregonians do not accept the bullying tactics of activists. OHSU and Dr. Spindel are to be commended, both for courageously going forward with vital research and for making sure the public is aware of the violent aspect of the animal rights movement. Now is the time for animal rights groups such as PETA, Humane Society of the United States and others to come forward and denounce by name those that would commit violence in the name of 'animal rights.''

'These activists are disgraceful and this scientist and his family do not deserve this.

'Haven't these protesters ever received a vaccine or had a loved one successfully treated for cancer? Don't they know that animals were studied to generate these treatments?

'Anyone who has benefited from animal research, meaning all of us, need to stand up for what's right.'

'Our government has set the standards the ALF is following, why should ALF be singled out for following government procedures?'

* * *

'When a few of these violent, vicious, sanctimonious ALF religious fanatics wind up in GitMo alongside their Al Qaeda brethren, we'll see a sudden cessation in ALF activities, because like all upper-class spoiled children, they only consider their vileness a good idea so long as there are no real consequences for themselves. It's time for Homeland Security to start treating these psychos like the terrorists they are.'

'My heart goes out to the researchers who are committed to providing medical cures and treatments, and who must do their work under this kind of threat and harassment. Thank you, Dr. Spindel, for your work that may help ensure the health of future generations. We, who have held sick children in our arms and grieved over those who have not survived, are eagerly awaiting the results of your work and the work of others in your community.

'The violence of the ALF and the animal rights organizations who support and encourage these tactics is no different than the violence inflicted on our nation by terrorist organizations who seek to destroy America. How very uncivilized that they resort to threatening to kill anyone who disagrees with them.'

'Mike Hammons, administrative captain for the Lake Oswego Police Department, said they are aware criminal mischief took place, but they are not sure who did it.

'Hmmm ... could it be the same people that: Protest when the circus comes to town, shut down Schumacher Furs, protest KFC …

'These cowards shouldn't be difficult to track down!'

'I am also an animal lover and am happy to see scientists and institutions taking unilateral action to use less animals in research. However, these urban terrorists/punks' tactics don't make me want to support them. Intimidating reputable scientists with goals as preventing birth defects in infants whose mothers smoke cigarettes is lost on me.

'I hope Dr. Spindel is unfazed by these punks.'

* * *

'To Members of ALF - Why don't you attack the smoking mothers whose choices require the research of OHSU?'

'I suggest that after the next Cowardly Black Mask protest, someone follow the participants home. Then ask the parents if they know what these children have been doing during playtime.'

ALF terrorists are supported with funds from PETA (People for the Ethical treatment of Animals. Those who are not familiar with PETA should go to Petakillsanimals.com. PETA / Alf are not animal rights, but terrorists. Their ultimate aim is to eliminate all 'owned' animals, pets, zoos, service animals, meat. We are all to become Vegans. Is this the world you foresee for your children?'

'One of these days, people are going to start pushing back against these psychotic lunatics, so law enforcement needs to continue to take these hate crimes very seriously and work to put a stop to them.

'To the parents of these childish, nutty loons, take control of your children and get them some professional psyhchiatric help, before they end up in prison, or worse.'

'A bit of graffiti is nothing comparing to the torment these people put the animals through. Long live the ALF and shame on the cowards above who support the animal abusers.'

'Animal rights terrorists have taken their cause too far. It's no wonder that the animal rights community is under fire. They've gone from activists to extremists to terrorists. Their tactics: To bully, to threaten, to intimidate. Now they're threatening people's lives (fire bombings). Where does it end?'

'Kudos to ALF … I have seen what these reseachers do to primates and other critters, imagine yourself restrained in a metal vice while these inhumane humans put clorox, listerine etc. in (animals') eyes or force a pregnant primate to smoke to see if the baby will be affected, well duh, the baby is born dead, so you go and call us whatever your dark hearts desire but we will always support ALF and to hades with the law enforcement, they are no better than the reseachers.'

'You people make me sick. How can you equate spray painting a slogan and peaceful demonstrations to terrorism? That lacks all logic. Maybe that's why you resort to ad-homanim attacks instead of intelligent debate. The ALF and other animal activists have more courage and passion then any of you hacks will ever understand.

'To say that Spindel's research is useful completely ignores the facts. For years animal testing was used by tobacco companies to say that smoking was healthy. Animal models have proven to be an ineffective form of research especially when it comes to tobacco research. It's wasteful and fradulant science at the expense of millions of animals lives and billions of taxpayer dollars.'
