The 1-0 victory keeps Lake Oswego's hopes alive for a spot in the North American semifinals
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Reid Penney hit a sixth-inning home run to send the Lake Oswego Little League all-star baseball team to a dramatic 1-0 victory over the Massachusetts all-stars in the second round of the Little League World Series on Sunday.
With victory in Monday's game against Ohio, the Lake Oswego team will assure itself a spot in the North American semifinals later this week.
The home run by Penney, who hit five round-trippers in the Northwest Regionals, culminated a dramatic pitching duel on Sunday. Starting hurler Mitch Lomax kept Lake Oswego's hopes alive by limiting the New England champions to two hits and no runs through 5 2/3 innings. Calvin Hermanson then came on to record game's final out.
Lake Oswego had six hits in the game, including a team-high two hits by catcher Brennan Malagamba. Lake Oswego also played near flawless defense, committing just one error in the game.
