As has been their custom for decades, Duniway Elementary School students welcomed the end of their school year and the beginning of summer with a festive parade along Reed College Place on June 10.
'Indeed, we're celebrating the end of a great school year,' exclaimed Duniway parent and the parade's organizer for the fifth year, Michelle Alberts. 'While the students are excited about the coming of summer, and marching with their class - I think they're really most excited about the Popsicles afterward.'
As in the past, teachers helped their students decide on a theme for their class' unit in the march, its wardrobe choices, and other accoutrements.
With an escort provided by Portland Police Bureau Traffic Division motorcycle officers, and led off by Portland Fire and Rescue's crew from Westmoreland's Station 20, the parade traveled northward from the school.
'I think this is the only 'two-sided' parade I've seen,' remarked Becca Anderson, as the procession rounded the end of the Linden Alee at Reed College and returned back on Reed College Place. 'Everyone crosses over and gets to watch the parade again!'
Riding in the parade, Duniway Principal Dr. Sara Hahn summed it up with her comment for THE BEE: 'Look at this! What an exciting event!'
