Spiral Gallery hosts Summer Saturday Art Classes beginning July 9

by: Jami Berry The Spiral Gallery, 341 S. Broadway, is offering summer art classes for participants ages 10 and up.

Those looking to hone in on their artistic talents this summer, be it drawing or playing with clay, need look no further than Estacada's own Spiral Gallery Artists' Cooperative, which will host its first-ever series of Summer Saturday Art Classes starting July 9 and running through Aug. 27.

Throughout the summer, the Spiral Gallery will hold art classes every Saturday morning from 9-11 a.m., for everyone ages 10 and up at a cost of $10 per class.

'We thought about shifting into sharing our artistic knowledge,' gallery artist Nina Bradford says of the cooperative's decision to offer a set of summer classes. 'There has been some interest in an art class from the community, so we thought we would offer them. We are very excited about being able to do this.'

The season of Saturday classes will get under way on July 9 with artist Eileen Belanger teaching a drawing class. Norma Piper will teach drawing on July 23 and on Aug. 20, artist John Moore will teach drawing as well.

'We have several drawing classes offered, which I think will all be really interesting because we are such a visual society,' Bradford says. 'Knowing how to draw pictures is such a valuable tool and it's fun. What you learn when you learn to draw is, you learn to see. It's all about looking and seeing. The drawing classes we are offering will be taught by three different artists and they will each have a different take.'

For those looking to make wearable art, Sue Dumolt will teach a jewelry class on July 16.

'She's just going to bring all of her materials in and let everybody make earrings and show them how to do it,' she says. 'There will be something for everyone.'

Indeed, the entire series will offer an artistic medium for everyone. On July 30, Annette Reisbick will teach a felting class and that will be followed by a wood bead jewelry class hosted by Phil Lingelbach and Julie Cooper.

'In that class, you will be able to design a wood bead and then work it into a necklace,' Bradford says, adding that wood engraving will be a part of those classes.

Bradford herself will teach a collage class on Aug. 13, with the season of Saturday classes wrapping up on Aug. 27 when Am Griswold teaches a class on clay.

The Saturday classes are in addition to the classes the Spiral Gallery offers every term. This summer there are intensive classes scheduled for photography, taught by Boyd Holloway, and watercolor, presented by Earlean Marsh, as well. These classes are not a part of the $10 Saturday classes.

'We have a wonderful group of artists at the gallery and everyone is very passionate about this area and the mediums in which they work,' Bradford says. 'They are all really excited about teaching them. It's going to be a lot of fun.'
