Gresham woman drowns in Montana river
A 70-year-old Gresham woman drowned in the Blackfoot River in western Montana on Tuesday, July 5.
Maxcine Viola Smith was rafting with her daughter, 15-year-old granddaughter and three other people about 30 miles east of Missoula when the raft hit a wave, sending Smith and her daughter overboard.
Smith's daughter was able to swim to safety, but Smith's body was recovered about 3 miles downstream in the river, which was at almost five times its normal flow, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Authorities reported that it did not appear the group was doing anything reckless or irresponsible.
