Tigard Man dies in car crash in Champoeg Park

A Tigard man was killed Friday after he lost control of his car and crashed in Champoeg State Park outside of Newberg.

Oregon State Police said John Barry Pearce, 41, of Tigard was not wearing a seat belt when the Honda Civic he was driving lost control, drove through a fence and down an embankment landing on its hood.

According to Senior Trooper Douglas Brown, state police, fire and medical personnel responded to the crash at the entrance of the park at about 9:17 p.m., July 8, and found Pearce thrown from the vehicle, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Also in the car at the time of the crash was 54-year-old Steven Frank Elredge, of Portland. Elredge was wearing a seat belt and was found inside the vehicle alive, but seriously wounded.

Elridge was transported to Providence Newberg Medical Center and later taken to Oregon Health and Science University.

The state police's crash reconstruction team is assisting with the ongoing investigation.

Alcohol and speed were believed to be contributing factors to the crash.
