Scappoose Juniors win district championship
Scappoose goes unbeaten in six-team tournament to earn trip to state
The Scappoose Juniors got a first-round bye, then breezed through three District 1 tournament games to earn themselves a trip to the Little League state tournament at Cascade High School this Saturday.
Scappoose pummeled Parkrose Wednesday in their first game of the tournament, 25-1, but ironically would meet them in the championship game on Sunday. It was a much closer contest.
The big match-up was supposed to be with St. Helens on Friday evening, and the game was close in the early going. However, Scappoose would pull away and record a 12-2 win. St. Helens dropped down and lost a close game with Parkrose, 13-12. That sent Parkrose into the finals with Scappoose, but needing to win twice to take the title.
Parkrose took the early lead against Scappoose, scoring two runs off two walks, a single and an error.
Scappoose bounced back with two runs of their own after two outs. Stephen Johnson was hit by a pitch, and Lionel Sandoval followed with a single. He moved to second on a throw to third. Johnson would score on a passed ball, and Sandoval went home on a bloop single by Anthony Bernal. That tied up the game.
Scappoose would take the lead for good in the bottom of the second. Owen Fortney led off with a single and moved to second when a pick-off throw got away. Jake Ford then singled to score him. Ford advanced on a fly to right by Logan Brooks, then scored on a single by Justin Hering.
Bernal doubled in the bottom of the third, and Will Sprute singled to score him.
Parkrose would add a run in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the fifth Scappoose increased their lead. Johnson would drill one into the centerfield fence and score to make it a a 6-3 game. Sandoval followed with a homer over the left field fence and it was 7-3. Each team would add one more run for an 8-4 final.
Scappoose now heads to Turner for the state tournament, Saturday, July 16 through Thursday, July 21.
The tournament starts with pool play, and the top two from each pool make the finals.
Scappoose kicks of the tournament on Saturday with a game against Central Point at noon. Sunday, they face the District 2 champ (not recorded by press time) at noon. They finish pool play against the District 3 champ at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
