Food box campaign needs donations, volunteers
Donations of food, hygiene supplies and household products are needed as part of a partnership between the Salvation Army and the Feed The Children's Americans Feeding Americans Project.
Approximately 1,600 struggling families will receive food boxes, as well as boxes of grooming and other household supplies, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, at the Regal Lloyd Center Stadium 10 Cinema parking lot at 1510 N.E. Multnomah Blvd., in Portland.
Families that qualify for assistance can pick up a voucher, which can be redeemed for food and other items, at Portland area Salvation Army Corps, including the Gresham Center for Worship and Services at 473 S.E. 194th Ave. Vouchers are available until Tuesday, July 19.
The distribution is the latest stop on Feed The Children's Americans Feeding Americans Caravan, which has helped more than 100,000 families across the country in areas affected by the nation's economic downturn. It's the second year the event has taken place in Portland.
Pre-packaged boxes contain canned food and other non-perishable food items, household products such as paper towels and cleaners, hygiene items such as soap and deodorant, and Avon products.
More than 100 volunteers also are needed from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. to work two to three hour shifts unloading boxes and carrying boxes to cars. Some boxes could weigh more than 25 pounds, so volunteers must be strong.
In addition, families benefiting from the event must provide their own transportation to and from the distribution site in Portland and have a way to carry their three boxes home with them.
