Oregon City police chase down suspect in Canby jewelry theft
Michael Patrick Pownell of Wilsonville, 23, ended up in the Clackamas County Jail without bail on Wednesday after leading Oregon City police on a merry chase on Interstate 205 and then crashing his vehicle near the 10th Street exit in West Linn.
Pownell, who is suspected of stealing a $2,800 bracelet from the Canby Fred Meyer, plus the Acura he was driving, is charged with two attempts to elude a police officer and reckless driving. He already had a parole violation on his record, officials said.
After the Canby jewelry theft, Fred Meyer employees reported the license plate of the car the suspect was using. Oregon City officers later spotted a vehicle matching that description on Tumwater Drive and indicated that the driver should pull over. Instead, the suspect headed for I-205 and ended up crashing the vehicle and attempting to run away. Police then used a K-9 team to capture him.
