After a year of extensive remodeling, the Indonesian furniture store 'Chantiques' celebrated their grand re-opening in November in the Brooklyn neighborhood.
The bright new showroom at 3384 S.E. Milwaukie Avenue formerly housed Old Friends Antiques, but now is devoted entirely to handcrafted wood furniture and reproductions for home and garden.
Owners Keith and Nadia Miller operate the store, along with Sales Manager Michael Doss. 'We did a big remodel here, opening up the ceiling and putting in skylights,' says Keith. 'Now we're working on a back patio area to display garden furniture, and have plans to put in a mezzanine. The main floor has about 5,000 square feet of display area; the new work will add about 2,000 more. We also have a Bargain Basement downstairs, featuring items up to 50% off.'
With display windows outlined festively in strands of tiny white lights, Chantiques is a wonderland of fascinating Indonesian furniture hand-carved from plantation-grown woods. 'We feature teak, mahogany, mango and mindi woods, and some bamboo and pandan,' says Miller.
'Some of our furniture is mirrored, and some has upholstery. We carry mostly chairs, tables, cabinets and benches for indoors and out. We have lots of masks, bookcases, display pedestals, statues, carvings, and bamboo accessories, and we also carry brass and ceramic items.'
The couple spends about half their time traveling in Indonesia, seeking out the unique items they offer their customers. Miller points to a table with an unusual multi-colored batik wood design. 'The folks who make this furniture do it mostly by hand,' he notes. 'We have a good selection here of what we call 'furniture with personality' and European reproductions.'
Chantiques has been located other places in Portland since opening in 1998, but Miller likes the additional space at the Brooklyn site. 'It's working out better for us here,' he says. 'We're open every day from 11 am to 5 pm. Our Sales Manager Michael Doss is in charge when we're out of town. We're planning a reopening celebration for December 15.'
