Increasingly, occasions for presenting gifts to other human beings double as occasions for doing the same for the animal companions with whom we share our homes -- and you don't have to go far in Inner Southeast Portland to do it.
Sellwood Dog Supply, a business now over a year old at 8334 S.E. 17th Avenue, has recently been expanding their product selection and showroom, stocking up on holiday pet gifts. Although focused mostly on canine items, the shop also does have a section for cats, birds, rabbits, and rodents.
The store's owners, Mary and Charlie Gibbs, know that December is a time when pet owners look for special gifts for their animal companions. Sales associate Damian Bell says, 'We have a large supply of beds, bowls and exercise toys. For health care, we have homeopathic dog care products for calming and arthritis relief, and dietary supplements. We've expanded our small animal food area, and are starting to get in more fish food.' A substantial variety of wet and dry foods are also available in the dog and cat food section.
'We strive to provide your dog with natural food, outdoor wear, toys, treats, beds, and fun at every turn,' enthuses Bell. 'We have a good supply of new Gold Paw raincoats that we make ourselves, as well as boots and dog goggles called 'Doggles'. Our motto is, 'For good living with good dogs'.'
Pets need exercise, and a selection of collars (some reflective), harness and leashes let dogs anticipate their daily walk. A variety of decorative 'poo bag' holders that snap easily to a leash will never leave an owner empty-handed. Frisbees, Chuck-It ball launchers and other play toys appeal to the frisky set, while older dogs can be pampered with locally made custom stairsteps, blankets and raised dog dishes to ease their journey to bed and board.
Dogs are welcome inside Sellwood Dog Supply; an indoor 'watering hole' and a prominent front door sign make that clear. Dogs and cats can receive services at a monthly Vet Clinic sponsored by Good Neighbor Veterinary (www.goodneighborvet.com), or call 1-888/234-1350 for information.
Sellwood Dog Supply reports that it often hosts special events, such as a December 14 anesthesia-free tooth-cleaning service for dogs and cats. On December 1, representatives from 'Pacific Pug Rescue' arrived to show and talk about adoptable pug dogs. Maria Menolasino, President of the Vancouver/Portland Chapter of Pacific Pug Rescue, urged interested folks to check that organization's website: www.pacificpugrescue.org.
Sellwood Dog Supply is open Monday through Friday 9 am to 7 pm; Saturdays 9 to 6, and Sundays from 11 till 5. Phone 503/239-1517 for information, or check the web at: www.sellwooddogsupply.com.
