Sandy boys pull to within four points in the second half
The Sandy boys basketball team could not overcome a slow start and fell 53-41 to Forest Grove in Wednesday night's nonleague match-up.
The Pioneers were outscored 26-11 in the first half, managing only four points the entire second period and committing several turnovers that led to some quick Forest Grove points before the half.
"We didn't give ourselves an opportunity to score,' Sandy coach Chris Meyers said. 'We only scored four points in the quarter and didn't make any opportunities for us to score."
Forest Grove point guard Brett Baumgartner nailed a series of first-half 3s and led all players with 19 points.
Sandy came out strong in the third period, led by a pesky defense, and the sharp shooting of Tommy D'Aboy and Jerad Spencer.
The Pioneers scored more points in the first five minutes of the third period than they had the entire first half.
Sandy gradually cut the margin to four points, but Forest Grove regrouped and kept steadily ahead the rest of the way. The Vikings hit 12 straight foul shots in the closing minutes.
"We played outstanding, our best defensive game of the year we just turned the ball over too many times,' Meyers said.
Forest Grove wing Tony Pacheco finished with 14 and solidified the victory by hitting all of his foul shots down the stretch.
