Reds place second at state tourney

CAL RIPKEN - Big hits push Sandy to an opening win over host Newberg at 12U state
by: David Ball Sandy’s Ethan Wright, 4, clears a spot at home plate, as teammates await the arrival of Nick Schaffer, who hit a three-run homer during the Pioneers’ opening win over host Newberg on Friday.

NEWBERG - The Sandy Red all-stars left the home crowd in a funk Friday, opening the Northern Oregon state Cal Ripken tournament with a convincing 9-2 win over Newberg.

Sandy broke up a 2-2 deadlock in the third inning when Colby Bonner hit a line-drive off the pitcher's back, giving him time to reach first safely, while teammate Christian Jensen scrambled home from third for the go-ahead run.

The Red squad gained some breathing room in the fourth inning when Logan Kasch and Jensen combined for back-to-back singles. That set the stage for Nick Schaffer's big bat, banging a three-run homer that crashed off the scoreboard in center field.

'That homer really got out bats going,' Sandy coach Steve Dukart said. 'You could feel our energy pick up and we started hitting the ball.'

Sandy finished its scoring in the fifth when Jacob Hartley connected for a lead-off single, worked his way around the bases and slid home on a wild pitch. Cody Anderson and Kasch scored later in the inning after drawing walks.
