The 6-0 senior guard tallies a season-high 15 points in a 64-49 Gladiator victory
GLADSTONE - Senior Evan Muffenbier lit up the scoreboard from downtown to lead Gladstone's boys basketball team to a 64-49 win over Taft on Dec. 18.
Muffenbier tallied a season-high 15 points on the night, connecting with 3-for-6 accuracy from 3-point land.
Muffenbier's play was pivotal in the third period, when the Gladiators out-scored their guests 24-13. He tallied 12 points in the period, hitting all three of his 3-point baskets.
The Gladiators led 36-26 at halftime, and they were in charge the rest of the way.
Junior guard Taylor Taft (13 points), senior guard Dueford Adams (10 points) and senior forward Nick Maszy (10 points) joined Muffenbier in double figures in scoring.
'Overall, as a team, it was our best passing game since the 2004-05 season,' said Gladstone coach Ted Yates. 'We had 17 assists on 23 baskets. We moved the ball around really well.'
Taft and Adams had 14 assists between them.
The Gladiators were also tough on the backboards. Alex Armstrong corralled 10 rebounds to lead the Glads to a 26-11 advantage on the backboards.
Muffenbier and Adams headed up a strong team defensive performance, each of them with three steals.
'We did a pretty good job of getting out on the fast break,' said Yates. 'Armstrong had some great outlet passes.'
With the win, the Gladiators improved to 4-3 on the season. They vie in a tournament in Cottage Grove Friday and Saturday.
