Kingsmen outman The Dalles

Mihub, Schwartz pack the one-two punch

MILWAUKIE - The Rex Putnam Kingsmen showed up ready to play and took care of business in a Dec. 18 boys basketball game with The Dalles.

The Kingsmen took charge from the outset, building an early 9-2 lead en route to a 56-41 win.

Still, the Indians remained within striking distance until the fourth quarter, when the Kingsmen attacked the basket from a patient offense, and put the game away at the free throw line. The Kingsmen were 9-of-11 from the line in the fourth quarter, when they outscored their guests 17-8.

'The key was we put a lot of bodies on the floor, substituting every couple of minutes, and [The Dalles players] got tired,' said Putnam assistant coach Tyler Rose.

Putnam senior post Ali Mihub (18 points) and senior point guard Kevin Schwartz (14 points) headed the offensive attack. Schwartz scored eight points in the fourth period, when he was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Schwartz also sparked the defense with four steals.

Mihub was also tough on the backboards, hauling down 11 rebounds.

Putnam post James Clift was an intimidating force close to the basket. The 6-8 senior scored 6 points, claimed 7 rebounds, and had 3 blocked shots.

The win put the Kingsmen at 4-3 on the season.

Putnam has had balanced scoring in the preseason. Through seven games, Derek Ridder and Jake Rickert were averaging 11 points apiece; Mihub was averaging 9 points and 8 rebounds.

Putnam travels to Summit High School in Bend this Thursday for a three-day tournament.
