Timbers get first road win
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. - The Portland Timbers got their first MLS road victory Saturday night, using a penalty kick and a hot goalkeeper to defeat the Chicago Fire 1-0 at Toyota Park.
Jack Jewsbury scored the PK in the 25th minute, and teammate Troy Perkins made a season-high seven save for his fourth shutout (and first since May 21).
The Timbers improved to 6-9-3, 21 points) and snapped a seven-game winless streak.
Chicago fell to 2-6-12 (18 points).
Jewsbury's team-high fifth goal came after forward Jorge Perlaza drew a foul inside the goal box.
Diego Chara and Kenny Cooper each had three shots for Portland, which was outshot 19-12.
The Timbers will play host to English Premier League West Bromwich Albion at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Jeld-Wen Field.
Portland's next MLS match is 5 p.m. PT Saturday at Columbus.
